Ilia Papas is a co-founder of the meal kit service, Blue Apron.
The concept was born in 2012 when Papas wished for a service that would allow him to quickly find a recipe and purchase ingredients in the right portions to avoid having seldom-used ingredients turn into food waste in the back of his fridge or pantry. That same year, he partnered with Matt Salzberg and Chef Matthew Wadiak to found what would be the first, widely-successful meal kit delivery service, Blue Apron.
Papas served as the CTO of Blue Apron for seven years, building and managing a 200-person engineering, design, product, data science and analytics team to create custom e-commerce and supply chain software to manage Blue Apron’s complex automated fulfillment centers.
Under his leadership, Blue Apron exploded in popularity to become a household name and define a new industry category. The meal kit company went public in 2017, reaching over 1 million customers and over $850 million in annual revenue.
Papas was uniquely suited to lead and grow the software Blue Apron was built on with his extensive career in e-commerce software development. Before founding the meal kit company, he was a director and technical architect at Optaros where he built software for enterprise e-commerce retailers such as Walmart’s health platform, RueLaLa.com, PUMA, Macy’s, CNN, and Turner Broadcasting.
Earlier in his career, Papas was a software engineer at Molecular (now Isobar) a provider of Internet-based financial, medical, media and retail solutions. In 2000, he began his career as a developer at Bullhorn, Inc., a creator of on-demand software for the staffing and recruiting industry.
The software leader currently sits on the board of Tufts University, as well as the external advisory board of Tufts’ computer science program.
Papas earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Tufts University.
