Messinger joined Twitter in 2011 as vice president of platform development. In 2012, he took on the role of VP of application development, responsible for UX and design, mobile and desktop web development, and more. When he took the CTO position in 2013, his responsibilities included product management as well as user research and design.. 

He left the company in 2016 amid a string of executive departures. 

Earlier in his career, he served as vice president of development at Oracle, leading the development of Exalogic and Java. He also served as a venture consultant at O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, and held various engineering positions at Borland, Gauntlet Systems Corporation, BEA, WebLogic, and Organic. 

Messinger earned his B.S. in physics and computer science from Willamette University where he was a G. Herbert Smith Scholar, and his M.S. in management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was a Sloan Fellow.
