Jeffrey Citron is the founder and chairman of Vonage, the telecommunications company he founded in 2001. He also serves as president of Mannis Group, a family office that manages large portfolios of private equity investments, venture capital, hedge funds, real estate, and direct investments in a variety of businesses.
Vonage was one of the first telecommunications companies to offer low-cost phone services transmitted via high-speed internet rather than through standard phone lines. The company went public in 2006, and it currently serves around 2.4 million subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Citron has served as chairman of the board since the company's founding. He served as CEO from 2001 to 2006, chief strategist from 2006 to 2008, and he also assumed the role of interim CEO in 2007.
Self-described as unmotivated when it came to academics, Citron graduated from high school and took a job as a gofer at Datek Securities on Wall Street. There, his passion for investing was sparked and he quickly emerged as a star trader with the company. In 1995, he left Datek to start his own company, The Island ECN, which became one of the largest electronic communication networks for trading stocks and transformed the financial services industry.
Citron rejoined Datek in 1998 and was named chairman and CEO of Datek Online Holdings Corp. Under his leadership, it became the fourth-largest online brokerage firm in the U.S. and was later acquired by TD Ameritrade.
After his departure from Datek, Citron had a hand in a number of companies and startups, including KEC Holdings and New World Aviation. In 1999, he founded The Charles Lafitte Foundation with his wife Suzanne. The nonprofit is named after the couple’s black labrador retriever, Charles, and it has donated over $5 million to nonprofit organizations in the U.S.
Citron currently serves multiple organizations in a variety of roles, including as managing partner for KEC Ventures, president of Mannis Group, and as a member of the boards of Luminate Health, Buzz Points, BoldStart Ventures, and the Duke University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative.
