Sir Jonathon has served on the Boards of Directors of Carnival Corporation and Carnival plc since 2010. In this role, he serves as chair of the company’s Health, Environmental, Safety & Security Committees and is also a member of the Nominating & Governance Committees and the Compliance Committees.
Sir Jonathon’s qualifications to serve on the Boards include his extensive experience in maritime and security matters gained through his 42 years of service with the British Royal Navy (Royal Navy), contributing to expansive understanding of our global operations, physical and technological security considerations, human capital matters, risk management and regulatory landscape. During his time with the Royal Navy, Sir Jonathon served as a naval officer with increasing positions of authority, including as First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, the most senior officer position in the Royal Navy, a position he held until his retirement in 2009.
After retiring from the Royal Navy, Sir Jonathon embarked on a life of non-executive responsibilities in the commercial and charity sectors. Sir Jonathon’s current and previous experience serving on boards of public companies with international operations provides him with deep corporate governance experience in a global context.
Sir Jonathon was Chair of Trustees of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and remains a Vice Patron. He is also the President of the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Charity; a Vice Patron of UK Blind Veterans; and President of the 1805 Historical Club, an organization conserving memorials to Georgian naval heroes. Additionally, he is a Patron of the MTB 102 Trust and Southsea Association; a Liveryman and Court Member of the Shipwrights Company; and a Younger Brother of Trinity House. Previously, he also served on the Board of Directors for Harland & Wolffe Group Holdings plc, Survitec Group and Lockheed Martin UK Limited. Among his many accomplishments, Sir Jonathon was awarded the National Maritime Historical Society Distinguished Service Award in 2012 for his contributions to the maritime field.
Having trained at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth and at sea, Sir Jonathon spent three years at the University of Exeter and is the recipient of honorary doctorates from Exeter and Portsmouth University.
