Under Kennedy’s leadership, Tilray pioneered numerous industry firsts, including becoming the first GMP-certified medical cannabis producer in North America, the first cannabis company to debut on a major U.S. stock exchange, and the first Canadian cannabis company to legally export medical cannabis to the U.S. for a clinical trial.
In December 2020, Tilray merged with Canadian marijuana company—Aphria—to become the largest cannabis company in the world by revenue. The merged company retained the Tilray name and stock ticker symbol, with Kennedy sitting on the new business’ board of directors.
Kennedy entered the cannabis industry in 2011 when he co-founded Privateer Holdings, the world’s first private equity firm to invest exclusively in legal cannabis where he was also CEO and executive chairman. With Kennedy heading Privateer, the firm raised over $200 million to construct a multinational portfolio of cannabis businesses, including Tilray.
Prior to Privateer and Tilray, Kennedy was the COO and managing director at SVB Analytics, a company focused on valuation services and corporate equity administration software for private technology and life science companies. At SVB Analytics, Kennedy completed over 350 client valuations for private companies, helped grow annual revenue from $0 to over $8 million, and expanded the client list from 0 to over 3000.
Kennedy holds an M.B.A. from the Yale School of Management, an M.S. in engineering from the University of Washington, and a B.A. from the University of California. He lives in Seattle with his wife, Maria.
