Dan Caruso is the executive chairman and interim CEO of ColdQuanta, the leader in cold atom quantum technology. He previously served as chairman and founding CEO at Zayo Group, a provider of communications infrastructure services.
Caruso founded Zayo in 2007, and he went on to lead the company through its 2014 IPO. Today, the company serves over 7,700 customers and yields $2.6 billion in annual revenue.
Before Zayo, Caruso served as CEO and president of ICG Communications, leading the company’s 2004 private buyout. He also started Level 3 Communications where he served in various strategic and operational roles in the areas of engineering, operations, construction, and marketing. Early on, he was part of the senior management team at MFS Communications, and he launched his career with Ameritech.
Caruso is an avid supporter of the entrepreneurial communities in both Colorado and Chicago, and he has a specific interest in the intersection of for-profit impact investing, inclusion, and entrepreneurship.
He has invested in multiple high-impact companies in Colorado including Galvanize, Secure Set, and Just Right Surgical. He also helped launch another Colorado company, Envysion, serving as its chairman between 2006 and 2013. Additionally, he invested in Colorado companies New Global Telecom and Datavail, as well as European telecommunications providers GTS Central Europe and euNetworks.
He sits on the board of Chicago Booth's Polsky Center and the Chancellor’s Strategic Advisory Council for the University of Colorado, Boulder. He served as the original steering committee chair for the Blackstone Entrepreneurs Network, and he has supported Startup Colorado from the time of its inception. He also supports Silicon Flatirons’ entrepreneurship initiative, the University of Denver’s Project X-ITE, Greenhouse Scholars, and the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT).
In 2016, Caruso launched the Boulder Think Tank, a collection of some of Boulder's most impactful serial entrepreneurs. In 2015, he and his wife created the Caruso Family Foundation to champion entrepreneurship, advance knowledge, and empower people to live healthier lives.
Caruso has received numerous awards over the years, including the Chicago Booth Distinguished Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship in 2016, the Colorado Governor's Corporate Citizenship Medal (Zayo) in 2015, the Boulder Chamber of Commerce’s Industry Leadership Award in 2015, and the Communications Technology Professionals’ Communications Executive of the Year award, among others. He was also recognized by Ernst & Young as an Entrepreneur of the Year regional winner in 2009 and national finalist in 2011.
He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.
