V. Gordon Clemons is the founder and board chairman of CorVel Corporation (previously FORTIS), roles he has held since 1991. The company is based in Irvine, California, and it offers managed care services in workers’ compensation, accident and health, and auto insurance markets nationwide.
Clemons started CorVel in 1987 with investors Jim Michael and Jeff Michael. They merged three small vocational rehabilitation firms to create the beginnings of CorVel, with an approximate value of $2 million and over 200 associates.
Two years later, they had expanded to 51 locations across the country, and they entered the medical bill review and case management business.
From 1998 to 2006, he served as CorVel’s president, and from 1988 to 2007, he also served as CEO. He was then reappointed as president and CEO in 2012, remaining in the role of president until 2017 and CEO until 2019.
The company went public in 1991 with a $46 million market capitalization.
Clemons has over four decades of experience in the healthcare and insurance industries. From 1985 to 1987, he served as the president of Caremark until it was purchased by health care company, Baxter International. From 1981 to 1985, he was the president of INTRACORP, a subsidiary of CIGNA.
Clemons holds a B.S. in business administration and technology from Oregon State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Oregon.
