Donald J. Steinberg is the founder of Nasdaq-traded Marijuana Company of America.
Prior to founding Marijuana Company of America, Steinberg developed stock option analysis and trading programs in the 1980s. The experience he gained managing floor traders on multiple options exchanges led to a career of starting new business concepts and taking companies public.
In the early 1990s, Steinberg co-founded prepaid phone card company, Globalcom 2000, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing players in the industry. Steinberg closed a deal with convenience store company, 7-Eleven, to become the first branded phone card with a Fortune 500 company in the United States.
In 1994, he established telecom business, One World Communications. Steinberg grew the company by creating an international, multi-level marketing sales force, opening 187 training centers worldwide.
Expanding on his marketing experience, Steinberg formed Club Vivanet in 2006, an international wholesale, retail, and network marketing company. After seeing opportunities emerging in the medical marijuana industry, he pivoted Club Vivanet into that space and renamed the company, Medical Marijuana Inc. The move made Medical Marijuana Inc. (MJNA) the first publicly traded medical marijuana company in the U.S.
In 2015, Steinberg acquired a controlling position in Converge Global Inc., which he spun into Marijuana Company of America that same year. Steinberg formatted MCOA as an umbrella for various companies engaging in different segments of the marijuana industry.
Marijuana Company of America focuses on the research and development of legal hemp-based health and wellbeing consumer products under the brand name hempSMART™. The brand is centered on an affiliate marketing program selling products containing CBD and supporting businesses selling cannabis in states where it has been legalized for medicinal and recreational use.
Steinberg stepped down as the CEO of Marijuana Company of America in December 2019.
