Possibly best known for his expertise in the “payer-provider” divide, Payson has led both providers and payers in cost outcomes and associated healthcare quality. Payson co-founded and served as the CEO of $3 million member health plan Healthsource from 1985 to 1997. In 1998, he became the CEO of Oxford Health Plans, transforming the company into a $6 billion enterprise by the time he left in 2002.
From 2005 to 2007, he served as chairman of Concentra, one of the largest occupational healthcare companies in the United States. Directly prior to Progyny, Payson spent four years as the CEO of Apria Healthcare, best known as a home infusion and respiratory therapy provider. Since 1997, Payson has been president and director of his family office, NCP, where he performs consulting and personal investment activities.
Payson currently serves on the boards of a variety of private and nonprofit companies, including City of Hope, HPM National Advisory Board at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia, Smile Brands, and USC Schaeffer Center Advisory Board. Additionally, he’s on the board of Kiva Foundation, a private charitable foundation he founded with his wife in 1998.
Payson earned his B.S. in planetary sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he holds a doctorate in medicine from Dartmouth Medical School. Payson is a California-licensed physician.
