Kate was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the National Council on Disability in 1994 and was reconfirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1996. For eight of her nine years on the council, she served as its vice chair.

She also serves as a member of the board of the Mary and Robert Pew Public Education Fund, a foundation established by her parents that addresses public education in Palm Beach County, Florida and as a member of the board of trustees of Grand Valley State University and the Grand Valley University Foundation.

Kate holds a master’s degree in social work from Michigan State University and a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids.

She has received honorary doctorates from Aquinas College, Michigan State University and Grand Valley State University, Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University (1994), Arts Award from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids (1997), YWCA Tribute Award (1997), and the Women of Achievement and Courage Award from the Michigan Women’s Foundation (2001).
