Kalan earned a master’s degree in public administration and policy from Florida State University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Florida. She is a recipient of the U.S. Navy Superior Public Service Award.

She serves on the board of directors for the INOVA Health System, the National Association of Manufacturers, and the Wolf Trap Foundation and is a Center for Strategic and International Studies Women’s Global Leadership Fellow.
