James “Jim” McKelvey is the co-founder of mobile payments company Square, and a member of its board of directors. He is a serial entrepreneur, having launched at least seven startups and nonprofits—most recently, Invisibly, a St. Louis, Missouri-based startup aiming to help publishers monetize digital content.
Raised in St. Louis, McKelvey attended Washington University in St. Louis. After his graduation, he joined IBM as a contractor. He then went on to found Mira Smart Conference and co-found Third Degree Glass Factory.
In 2009, he started Square with Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey. The idea for the company came after he ran into issues trying to sell a piece from his glassblowing studio. Now, Square allows small merchants to accept payments with ease from their mobile devices. The company had over 2,500 employees and a market capitalization of $20 billion as of 2020.
McKelvey also co-founded LaunchCode, a nonprofit dedicated to helping coders land their first jobs at top companies by setting up paid technology apprenticeships.
He is an independent director for numerous privately-held companies, in addition to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In March 2020, he published a book, “The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time.”
McKelvey earned his B.A. in economics and a B.S. in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis.
