Derek Peterson is the chief strategy officer and director of Terra Tech Corp., a medical and adult-use cannabis company.
Peterson joined Terra Tech in 2012 as president and CEO, roles he held until 2017. He has been chairman of the board since 2012. Leveraging his investment banking experience, Peterson has led the company’s launch of MediFarm, a medical cannabis RFP management company, and medical cannabis brand, IVXX.
Prior to entering the marijuana industry, Peterson’s finance career started at what was then the largest independent West Coast broker-dealer, Crowell, Weedon & Co. He quickly rose within the company becoming partner and branch supervisor as well as bringing in more than $10 million of sales.
Peterson then built a presence for the precursor of Wells Fargo Advisors—Wachovia Securities—from the ground up in southern Orange County. As its first vice president and branch manager, he grew the Mission Viejo, California location to $15 million in sales.
The investment banker then joined Morgan Stanley Smith Barney as a senior vice president where he oversaw $100 million of assets. During this time Peterson was involved in numerous public and private equity financings, including several that he personally funded from angel to mezzanine levels.
As a co-owner of Black Oak Gallery, a retail medical cannabis dispensary, Peterson gained experience in marijuana regulation by working with the Oakland government authorities to create medical cannabis ordinances and operating permits. Black Oak Gallery was acquired by Terra Tech in 2016.
Peterson is a CFP professional and holds his Series 7, Series 9 and 10, Series 3, Series 65, and California Insurance License. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management at Pepperdine University.
