Niraj Shah is the co-founder and CEO of Wayfair, an online furniture retailer headquartered in Boston.
Born in 1974 to Indian immigrants, Shah grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He met his future Wayfair co-founder, Steve Conine, in high school, and the two friends went on to attend Cornell University together.
Before starting CSN Stores—which would later become Wayfair—Shah and Conine founded enterprise software company, Simplify Mobile, which they sold in 2001. Shah was also the entrepreneur-in-residence for venture capital firm, Greylock Partners, chief operating officer at subscription-based learning site, iXL, and co-founder of the integrated technology and design company, Spinners, acquired by iXL in 1998.
The pair started CSN Stores in 2002, and they launched Wayfair.com in 2011.
Under Shah and Conine’s guidance, Wayfair quickly grew into a successful online retailer. The company now offers over 18 million products between five brands, Wayfair, AllModern, Birch Lane, Joss & Main and Perigold.
Wayfair went public in 2014, and when share prices rose above $70 in 2017, both founders became billionaires.
Fortune Magazine featured Shah on its 40 Under 40 list in 2013. He sits on the boards of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership.
Shah holds a degree in engineering from Cornell, and he resides in Boston, Massachusetts with his wife, Jill, and their two children.
