Steven Conine is the co-founder and co-chairman of Wayfair, an online furniture retailer headquartered in Boston.
Conine was raised in New Jersey, and as a teenager, he spent time working at two outdoor furniture stores that his mother founded.
He met future Wayfair co-founder, Niraj Shah, while in high school, and the two friends went on to attend Cornell University together. Conine earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
Before starting CSN Stores—which would later become Wayfair—Conine and Shah founded Spinners, which provided custom application development for Fortune 500 companies, including The New York Times, Merrill Lynch, and JP Morgan Chase. They sold Spinners to iXL in 1998, and Conine stayed on as COO for iXL’s London office. Conine and Shah then founded enterprise software company, Simplify Mobile, which they sold to Tangoe in 2001. The pair started CSN Stores in 2002, from which they launched Wayfair in 2011.
Under Conine and Shah’s guidance, Wayfair quickly grew into a successful online retailer. The company now offers over 18 million products between five brands, Wayfair, AllModern, Birch Lane, Joss & Main, and Perigold.
Conine heads up the technological innovations that give Wayfair an edge in the online retail world, from the development of architecting software systems to the leveraging of next-generation technologies like artificial intelligence and augmented reality.
Wayfair went public in 2014, and when share prices rose above $70 in 2017, both founders became billionaires.
Conine also sits on the board of CarGurus, a leading global online automotive marketplace.
He lives in Boston with his wife, Alexi, and their three children.
