He has also served as a Professor of Pediatrics and Social Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine and as a Professor of Health Policy and Administration at the UNC School of Public Health. Before joining UNC in 1997, Dr. Roper served as Senior Vice President of Prudential Health Care, a healthcare services company, from 1993 to 1997. He also served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1990 to 1993, on the senior White House staff in 1989 and 1990 and as the administrator of the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services from 1986 to 1989. Dr. Roper received his Bachelor of Science and Medical degrees from the University of Alabama.
